In 1967, a survey was conducted by the Commission on Membership and Evangelism that stated a need for a Methodist Church in South Florence. Just a few short months later, in January of 1968, thirty -four people met at Woody's BBQ on Pamplico Hwy to discuss that very possibility. A minister was appointed and just three weeks later, the church was duly organized and on it's way to minister to the people of the community.
The charter members of the church decided to honor the Bishop Cyrus B. Dawsey, who was a missionary to Brazil and a South Carolinian himself, as the namesake for the church.
After three years of worship at Woody's BBQ, a sanctuary was built and the first worship in the new building was Easter of 1971.
